Each person or group, from all walks-of-life, has a story. It may be memorable, influential, habitual, life changing, appear unimportant or mundane, but it was lived. An oral historian uses all senses and technology to accurately capture the spirit of the story and then preserve it for better understanding of people, events, past times, cultures, and situations.
This lively and interactive workshop equips you with the tools to become a respected oral historian who uses the right moves and techniques to creatively obtain, interpret and preserve the stories while maintaining historical truth. Along the way, the importance of the five W’s, the “H” and “so what” will be revealed. A highlight is the opportunity for you to capture an oral interview of a person matching your interest during our gathering. You will depart with a bundle of valuable resources plus a network of new best friends.
This workshop is for the curious from all walks-of-life, no matter your vocation, background, interest or goal. The common element is the desire or passion to discover real life. It is designed for the novice or the experienced oral historian.
It is awesome to see someone complete their first oral history and the excitement as they unearth the nuggets and gems of their finding.

One of the most exciting parts of my career is capturing oral histories of diverse groups who lived a lifetime, or a life segment that traversed an historical event or person, and group members who completed notable projects. Teaching, publishing and doing research in higher education for forty years; working with local, national and international diverse groups and cultures; legal research and; sitting on councils and corporate boards along with a with a doctoral minor in qualitative research formed my foundation for developing, discovering threads, elements and trends in oral histories and their preservation.
I look forward to the enriching viewpoints and experiences each of you bring to the discussion. Another important part of the workshop is interacting with each of you on an individual basis and then assisting you in future oral history endeavors.
